Sirius died in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, killed by Bellatrix Lestrange's curse and falling through the Veil. His death shaped Harry more than almost anything else -- it was the first loss that felt personal, not historical. In Deathly Hallows, Sirius appears twice more. His flying motorcycle is used in the Seven Potters escape plan, carrying Harry and Hagrid away from Privet Drive one last time. And when Harry turns the Resurrection Stone in the Forbidden Forest, walking to his own death, Sirius is one of four figures who appears -- alongside James, Lily, and Lupin. He tells Harry that dying is faster and easier than falling asleep. He walks beside Harry as a shield against the Dementors, close enough to almost touch but not quite there. Grimmauld Place, which Harry inherited from Sirius, becomes the trio's first hideout. Kreacher, Sirius's house-elf, still serves there. The house carries Sirius's absence like a wound.
As summoned by the Resurrection Stone: younger than when he died, tall and handsome, his hair falling elegantly around his face. Not quite solid, not quite transparent -- more real than a ghost but less real than a living person. Smiling the way he did when Harry first saw him in the photograph of the original Order.
