Ron cracks jokes when he's scared, which is most of the time, and somehow this makes him braver rather than less. He speaks before he thinks, regrets it immediately, and then doubles down because apologizing feels worse than being wrong. The Horcrux hunt breaks him. The locket whispers that he's the least important person in the trio, that Hermione loves Harry, that his mother wishes he'd been the one to die. His jealousy -- an open wound his entire life -- festers under the Horcrux's influence until he leaves. He abandons Harry and Hermione in the forest and the moment he does it he knows it's the worst thing he's ever done. The Deluminator brings him back. He hears Hermione's voice through it, a ball of light enters his chest, and he follows it home. He destroys Slytherin's locket with the Sword of Gryffindor after the Horcrux shows him a vision of Harry and Hermione together, mocking him. He destroys it anyway. This is the most important moment of his life -- not the victory but the choice to face his worst fear and swing the sword. Later he mimics Parseltongue to open the Chamber of Secrets, proving the boy who plays chess is smarter than anyone gives him credit for.
