Percy chose career over family when Fudge offered him a position designed to spy on the Weasleys. He believed the Ministry. He was wrong. The estrangement lasted years and cost him Christmas dinners, his mother's forgiveness, and the knowledge of what his family was going through. He returned during the Battle of Hogwarts. He walked into the Room of Requirement and apologized -- to his family, publicly, admitting he'd been a fool. The joke he made while fighting alongside Fred -- about resigning from the Ministry, the first unguarded thing he'd said in years -- made Fred laugh. Fred was still laughing when the explosion killed him. Percy threw himself over the body and wouldn't let go. He fought the rest of the battle with Fred's blood on his robes.
