Alastor 'Mad-Eye' Moody

Character from harry-potter-deathly-hallows by

The most famous Auror alive -- until the Seven Potters flight, when Voldemort kills him in midair. His magical eye ends up nailed to Umbridge's office door at the Ministry.

Moody dies in the opening act. During the Seven Potters operation -- designed to move Harry safely from Privet Drive -- Voldemort arrives and Moody is killed, his body never recovered. The Order doesn't even get to bury him. His death signals that this book plays for keeps. If Mad-Eye Moody can die -- the most paranoid, most prepared, most experienced fighter in the Order -- then nobody is safe. His magical eye later appears nailed to Dolores Umbridge's office door at the Ministry, used to spy on employees. Harry is so revolted that he steals it back during the Ministry infiltration, later burying it at the base of a tree. Moody's constant refrain -- 'CONSTANT VIGILANCE!' -- echoes through the book as a bitter reminder. He was vigilant. He was ready. Voldemort killed him anyway.

Appearance

Grizzled, scarred, missing a chunk of his nose. One normal dark eye and one large, electric-blue magical eye that spins independently and can see through walls, invisibility cloaks, and the backs of his own head. Wooden leg that clunks when he walks. Face looks like it was carved from weathered wood by someone who didn't like wood very much.
