Hedwig died in her cage during the Battle of the Seven Potters, hit by a Killing Curse meant for Harry. She was the first gift Harry ever received in the wizarding world -- Hagrid bought her at Eeylops Owl Emporium -- and her death was the first casualty of the final war. She was loyal, imperious, and the closest thing Harry had to unconditional companionship during his miserable summers at Privet Drive. Her death happens in the opening chapter and sets the tone for everything that follows: nobody is safe.
