Filch is a Squib in a castle of magic, and the Carrow regime has been the closest thing to a paradise his bitter heart has known -- they let him punish students properly. But when the battle begins and McGonagall orders the evacuation of underage students, Filch helps. He knows every corridor, every shortcut, every hiding spot. He is horrible and petty and hates every student who has ever set foot in Hogwarts, and he still helps evacuate them because this castle is his home and these are his students, even if he'd never admit it.
