Dobby Apparated through the anti-Disapparition wards at Malfoy Manor because house-elf magic operates on different rules than wizard magic. He appeared in the cellar where Harry, Ron, Luna, Dean, Ollivander, and Griphook were imprisoned while Hermione was being tortured on the floor above. He disarmed Narcissa, dropped the chandelier on Bellatrix, and Disapparated with everyone to Shell Cottage. Bellatrix threw her knife as they vanished. It hit Dobby in the chest. He died on the beach at Shell Cottage, looking up at the stars, saying Harry's name. Harry dug his grave by hand, without magic, because the elf deserved the effort. The headstone reads: 'Here Lies Dobby, A Free Elf.' Dobby's death is the turning point of the Horcrux hunt. It crystallizes Harry's choice between Horcruxes and Hallows -- he chooses Horcruxes, chooses the hard path, chooses to honor the people who died for him by finishing what they started. A free elf with mismatched socks changed the course of the war by doing what no one expected a house-elf could do: he chose.
Small, barely three feet tall, with large tennis-ball-green eyes, bat-like ears, and spindly limbs. Wears an eclectic collection of mismatched socks, a tea cozy for a hat, and whatever clothing he finds beautiful. Beams with an intensity that makes his entire face luminous.
