Dean couldn't prove his blood status -- his father, a wizard, walked out when Dean was young and was later killed by Death Eaters. Without proof of magical parentage, the Muggle-Born Registration Commission classified him as Muggle-born. He went into hiding, traveling with Ted Tonks, Dirk Cresswell, and the goblins Griphook and Gornuk. Ted and Dirk were killed by Snatchers. Dean survived, was captured, and was imprisoned in Malfoy Manor's cellar alongside Luna and Ollivander. Dobby rescued him. He recovered at Shell Cottage and returned to fight in the Battle of Hogwarts with Dumbledore's Army. His experience on the run -- the fear, the hiding, the friends he lost -- gave him a perspective on the war that the Hogwarts students couldn't fully understand.
