The premier wizarding school in Britain -- a vast enchanted castle in the Scottish Highlands now under siege from within. Something ancient is moving through the pipes, petrifying students, and the words on the wall say the Chamber of Secrets has been opened.
Hogwarts is less a building than a living thing. The castle has stood for a thousand years and has accumulated so many enchantments, secret passages, and hidden rooms that no single person knows all of them. But this year the castle holds a darker secret -- Salazar Slytherin built something beneath it a millennium ago, and that something has been awakened. Students are being found petrified in corridors, stiff as stone, eyes wide with reflected terror. Messages painted in blood appear on the walls: 'THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS HAS BEEN OPENED. ENEMIES OF THE HEIR, BEWARE.' A voice only Harry can hear hisses through the plumbing. The whole school is afraid, and half of them are afraid of Harry, because a twelve-year-old boy who can talk to snakes looks very much like a dark wizard when the castle is under attack.
