A goblin-made silver sword with rubies in the hilt that appears from inside the Sorting Hat to any true Gryffindor in a moment of dire need. Harry uses it to kill the Basilisk -- and the blade absorbs the serpent's venom, making it one of the few objects that can destroy a Horcrux.
The Sword appears when Harry, twelve years old and facing a sixty-foot Basilisk in an underground chamber, puts on the Sorting Hat and asks for help. It falls out of the Hat -- a weapon that shouldn't fit inside a hat, proving again that Hogwarts operates on rules it never bothers to explain. Harry drives the Sword through the roof of the Basilisk's mouth, killing it -- but one of the serpent's fangs pierces his arm, filling him with venom that would kill him in minutes if Fawkes didn't weep healing phoenix tears onto the wound. The Sword, having been bathed in Basilisk venom, is now permanently impregnated with one of the most destructive substances in the wizarding world. This will matter enormously later. For now, it is proof that the Hat chose correctly: only a true Gryffindor could have pulled that sword.
