Warm, earthy Head of Hufflepuff and Herbology professor who tends the Mandrakes that are the school's only hope of curing the petrified students -- if they mature in time.
Sprout is practical, nurturing, and tougher than she looks. This year she teaches second-years to repot baby Mandrakes -- screaming, ugly little plants whose cry can knock you unconscious as infants and kill you as adults. The Mandrakes must grow to maturity before they can be used to brew the Restorative Draught that will cure Mrs Norris, Nearly Headless Nick, Hermione, and the other petrified victims. Sprout tends them with the same no-nonsense affection she gives her students. She values loyalty and effort over talent and never makes anyone feel small. When the castle is threatened she keeps working -- because the plants are the cure, and the cure is her responsibility.
Short, dumpy, flyaway grey hair escaping from under a patched pointed hat. Dirt under her fingernails, robes usually earth-stained. Cheerful, ruddy face.
