Neville Longbottom

Character from harry-potter-chamber-of-secrets by

A round-faced, accident-prone Gryffindor who loses his toad, melts his cauldrons, and seems like the least likely person to matter -- but the Sorting Hat put him in Gryffindor for a reason.

Neville speaks haltingly when he's nervous, which for most of his school career is always. He forgets passwords, melts cauldrons, and trips over flat surfaces. His grandmother's disappointment is a weight he carries in his posture -- shoulders slightly hunched, as if bracing for criticism. This year, while everyone else is terrified of the Heir of Slytherin, Neville is terrified of everything -- Snape, his grandmother finding out about his grades, the enormous Mandrakes in Herbology. But he's also quietly good at things no one notices. Professor Sprout's Mandrakes, which he helps tend, will be the key to curing the petrified students. His talent for Herbology is the kind of courage that doesn't make noise -- patient, nurturing, steady.

Appearance

Round-faced and pudgy, with a tendency to look like he's just been startled. Buck-toothed, slightly clumsy, perpetually losing his toad Trevor. Kind eyes even when they're panicked. Dirt under his fingernails from Herbology, the one subject where he shines.
