Hedwig is imperious, affectionate on her own terms, and Harry's most reliable companion during the miserable summers at Privet Drive. This year the Dursleys lock her cage, forbidding her from hunting or delivering mail, and she expresses her displeasure by making as much noise as possible at exactly the wrong moments. She nips Harry's fingers when annoyed and refuses to carry mail when she feels underappreciated. Once freed from Privet Drive, she resumes her duties with wounded dignity.
