The diary was in her cauldron when she started school. She didn't know where it came from. She wrote in it because she had no one else to talk to, and it wrote back -- sympathetic, interested, understanding. Tom understood her. Tom was her friend. Tom asked her to do things she can't quite remember doing. She's been losing time. Waking in places she doesn't remember going. Finding rooster feathers on her robes. The attacks on Muggle-born students coincide with her blackouts, and she's beginning to suspect the terrible truth -- that she opened the Chamber of Secrets, that the monster answers to something speaking through her, that the diary is eating her alive. She tries to throw it away. She tries to flush it down a toilet. But by the time she's taken into the Chamber, she is too weak to fight and too consumed to call for help.
