Filch is a Squib in a castle full of magic, and that humiliation has curdled into rage directed at every student he encounters. He memorizes rule infractions with obsessive glee and lobbies constantly for harsher punishments. This year his world collapses when Mrs Norris -- his only companion, the creature he loves with alarming intensity -- is found petrified, hanging stiff from a torch bracket. Filch is devastated, furious, and convinced Harry did it because Harry was at the scene. He patrols the corridors with renewed vengeance, polishing the spot where Mrs Norris was found, waiting for the Mandrake Restorative Draught that will revive her. For once, the man everyone mocks has a genuine reason to grieve.
