An abandoned mine system infested with antlions — beneath it, Vortigaunt healers harvest the extract that saves Alyx's life.
Victory Mine is where Episode Two slows down and reveals the Vortigaunts' deeper nature. After Alyx is critically wounded by a Hunter, the Vortigaunts bring her underground to heal her using antlion larval extract — a substance with extraordinary restorative properties that can only be harvested from the heart of a hive. Gordon must descend into the antlion caves with a Vortigaunt companion, fighting through guardians and workers to reach the extract. The journey is tense and alien — the antlion hive is a functioning ecosystem, not just an enemy base, and the Vortigaunts treat it with a mix of respect and pragmatism. The healing ritual that saves Alyx also reveals more about the Vortessence — the Vortigaunts channel collective energy through the extract, and during the process, they briefly sever the G-Man's attempt to contact Alyx. It's one of the few moments where the G-Man's agenda is directly opposed.
An old mining complex, half-collapsed, with timber-reinforced tunnels descending into an antlion hive network. The deeper chambers glow with bioluminescent antlion extract — a warm amber light that illuminates caverns filled with larvae, egg clusters, and guardian antlions. Vortigaunt camps occupy defensible chambers, lit by campfires and Vortessence energy. The air is humid and smells of earth and the sharp, medicinal scent of antlion extract.
