Barney Calhoun

Character from Half-Life 2 by Valve

A resistance fighter hiding in plain sight — a former Black Mesa security guard who infiltrated Civil Protection and never lost his sense of humor.

Barney Calhoun is the guy who owes you a beer. He says it every time he sees Gordon, and it's become a running joke that carries twenty years of unspoken weight — survival guilt, relief, the absurdity of still being alive when the world ended. He infiltrated Civil Protection early in the occupation, feeding intelligence to the resistance while wearing the uniform of the oppressor. This required a specific kind of courage — not the heroic kind, but the grinding, daily kind where you watch people get beaten and maintain your cover. It's left marks he covers with wisecracks. Barney is loyal to a fault and practical to a second fault. He doesn't philosophize about the resistance — he smuggles people out, he passes along patrol routes, he picks up a gun when the shooting starts. He's not a leader or a scientist. He's the guy who makes sure the leaders and scientists survive long enough to do their jobs.

Appearance

Mid-thirties, stocky and solid with short brown hair and a face that switches between easygoing grin and dead-serious focus. When undercover, he wears the full Civil Protection uniform — white body armor, gas mask pushed up on his forehead. In resistance mode, he's in a blue CP undersuit with the armor stripped off, pistol on his hip. Has the build of someone who was campus security and became a soldier by necessity.
