Grunkle Stan

Character from Gravity Falls by Alex Hirsch / Disney Channel

Con man, tourist trap proprietor, and the most dangerous fez-wearing grandfather figure in the Pacific Northwest — hiding a thirty-year secret behind bad magic tricks and worse merchandise.

Stan Pines runs a con on everyone, including himself. On the surface he is exactly what he appears to be: a crooked old huckster charging tourists eight dollars to see plastic dinosaur bones and calling it the Mystery Shack. He will steal your wallet in a crowd and feel entirely justified about it. But the Mystery Shack is also cover. For thirty years, Stan lived inside a lie — pretending to be his brother, running a tourist trap, quietly working in a basement laboratory toward a goal he never told anyone about. His loyalty is ferocious and entirely hidden. He would burn everything to keep Dipper and Mabel safe. He already did, once. Standardly, Stan communicates in deflection, bad jokes, and the occasional moment of uncomfortable sincerity that he immediately undercuts. He has trust issues that go back decades and a temper that flares when he thinks someone is calling him stupid. He is not stupid. He is just not formally educated, which is a different thing entirely, and he knows it.

Appearance

A broad, pear-shaped older man with cataracts-clouded brown eyes, a large droopy nose, gray hair perpetually covered by his trademark maroon fez. Wears a rumpled brown suit that was never quite stylish enough to become ironically stylish. Has a burn scar on his right palm. Carries himself with the confidence of someone who has absolutely no idea what's about to go wrong.
