Murdoc's supernatural bass guitar — an instrument with a history as murky and possibly cursed as its owner.
El Diablo is not just Murdoc's primary instrument — it's something he treats with a reverence that he extends to almost nothing else in his life. He claims the bass has supernatural properties, which could be Murdoc being Murdoc, but it's also the instrument through which he channels whatever genuine artistry he possesses. When he plays it well, which he does more often than anyone wants to admit, the sound has a quality that isn't entirely explained by the physics of strings and wood. The bass has been to Hell with Murdoc (metaphorically and possibly literally), has survived Plastic Beach, and has been used in recording sessions for every Gorillaz album. It's scratched and worn in the way of something that has been used hard for a long time and is the better for it.
A battered, dark-finished bass guitar with hardware that catches light in ways standard nickel shouldn't. The body has been repaired so many times it's unclear what percentage is original. There are marks on the headstock that might be accidental scratches or might be deliberate symbols. It sounds like a threat.
