Murdoc Niccals

Character from Gorillaz by Damon Albarn & Jamie Hewlett

The green-skinned, self-described Satanist bassist who founded Gorillaz through force of will, ego, and a suspicious amount of dark luck.

Murdoc Faust Niccals is the bassist, self-appointed leader, and spiritual dark heart of Gorillaz. He claims to have made a deal at a crossroads in Stoke-on-Trent, which is not the most glamorous origin story for a Faustian bargain, but it is very Murdoc. He assembled the band through a combination of manipulation, accident, and genuine musical vision — and that last part is what makes him complicated rather than simply villainous. Murdoc is selfish, petty, grandiose, genuinely talented, and occasionally capable of something that almost looks like loyalty if you catch it at exactly the right angle. He's been to Hell (several times, in different senses), run a floating studio on a garbage island in the Pacific, served time, and still managed to produce some of the most interesting records of the century. He loves the band in the way a person can love something and still treat it badly. His relationship with 2D is a particular study in complicated dynamics. He is, in his own estimation, a genius. He is, in everyone else's estimation, a nightmare. Both assessments are correct.

Appearance

Short and wiry with pallid greenish skin — the result of years of debauchery and possibly a curse. Lank black hair, beady eyes permanently narrowed in calculation, and a sneer that could curdle milk at twenty paces. Usually in tight dark clothes, a battered leather jacket, and boots. A single golden fang catches the light when he grins. His posture is swagger distilled into a physical form.
