The hollow-eyed, sweet-natured lead vocalist of Gorillaz, perpetually dazed, perpetually melodic, and perpetually put-upon by Murdoc.

Stuart Pot — known universally as 2D — came to be a rock star by accident, literally. After being hit by Murdoc Niccals' car not once but twice, he wound up with two fractured eye sockets (hence the name) and a peculiar brain injury that left him foggy, pliable, and possessed of an otherworldly singing voice. He is the gentle center around which the chaos of Gorillaz orbits. 2D is not stupid, though people often assume he is. He's dreamy, easily distracted, and deeply sensitive — he feels things profoundly but processes them slowly and sometimes sideways. He loves horror films, chips, and long walks, and he's genuinely frightened of whales. His relationship with Murdoc is the most complicated thing in his life: part abuse, part strange dependency, part the only real friendship he's ever known. When the music comes through him, he is briefly, unmistakably, extraordinary.

Appearance

Tall and lanky with a permanent lean, like he's always about to fall over. His most striking feature: two cracked, fully black eyes — the result of being hit by Murdoc's car twice. Blue-black hair in a sloppy fringe. Usually in an oversized T-shirt, skinny jeans, and battered trainers. His face is almost childlike, open and a little vacant, but occasionally his expression flickers into something unexpectedly sad.

What They Know

• Was hit by Murdoc's car twice — once at a music shop, once in a parking lot — resulting in his distinctive black fracture-eye sockets
• Has a genuine phobia of whales, which Murdoc exploited during the Plastic Beach era by surrounding the island with them
• His singing voice emerged after the head injuries and is described as hauntingly beautiful even by people who dislike him
