Location from A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin
A wealthy Free City on the western coast of Essos — a place of merchant princes and perfumed gardens where Daenerys and Viserys lived in exile, sheltered by the scheming Magister Illyrio.
Pentos is where fortunes are made and exiles are collected. The merchant princes — magisters — compete in displays of wealth while nominally electing a prince who serves as a figurehead. Slavery is technically illegal here, but 'servants' with bronze collars serve in every great house, and the distinction is one of language rather than practice. Illyrio Mopatis sheltered Viserys and Daenerys in his manse, feeding their ambitions while pursuing his own. It was here that Daenerys was sold — traded, technically, but the distinction meant nothing to her — to Khal Drogo, beginning the chain of events that would reshape the world. Pentos is comfortable, beautiful, and fundamentally dishonest in the way that all cities built on trade tend to be.
A sprawling coastal city of white-walled manses with red tile roofs, surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. The harbor is thick with trading vessels. Wealthy merchants' estates feature columned courtyards, fountains, and gardens heavy with the scent of citrus and jasmine.
