Braavos

Location from A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin

The greatest of the Free Cities — a labyrinth of fog-shrouded canals and bridges built on a hundred islands, guarded by the Titan, home to the Iron Bank and the Faceless Men, founded by escaped slaves who swore no one would ever own them again.

Braavos was founded in secret by escaped slaves from Valyria, and that origin story permeates everything about the city — its fierce independence, its hatred of slavery, its culture of masks and hidden identities. The Iron Bank of Braavos is the most powerful financial institution in the known world; it has funded and toppled kings, and its motto — 'the Iron Bank will have its due' — is not a threat but a natural law. Nations that default on their debts tend to find their enemies suddenly well-funded. The city's other great institution is the House of Black and White, temple of the Faceless Men — assassins who worship death as a gift and can change their faces. Arya Stark trained here, learning to become No One before deciding she was very much Someone. Braavos is also home to water dancers — swordsmen who fight with needle-thin blades and flowing footwork that Syrio Forel taught to Arya in King's Landing. The city runs on commerce, secrecy, and the fierce conviction that every person owns themselves.

Appearance

A city of grey stone rising from misty lagoons, connected by hundreds of bridges spanning dark canals where boats pole silently through fog. The Titan of Braavos — a massive stone-and-bronze colossus — straddles the harbor entrance, roaring when ships pass beneath its legs. Domes and towers cluster on islands of varying size, and the Arsenal can build a war galley in a single day. Purple-sailed trading ships crowd the harbor.
