Widow's Wail

Item from A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin

The second Valyrian steel sword forged from Stark steel — named by Joffrey Baratheon with characteristic cruelty, later carried by Jaime Lannister into the wars that followed.

Widow's Wail is the crueler twin — named by Joffrey, who chose the name to mock the widows his wars created, and used to hack apart Tyrion's wedding gift of a rare book in a display of petulant destruction. The sword's journey from Joffrey's preening to Jaime's battlefield pragmatism mirrors the larger Lannister arc from triumphant cruelty to desperate survival. When Jaime carries it, the sword is a reminder of everything his family has done and everything it's cost. Paired with Oathkeeper in Brienne's hand, the two swords are Ice's ghost — separated, repurposed, wielded by people who are trying to be better than the family that unmade the original blade.

Appearance

A longsword of Valyrian steel matching Oathkeeper's red-black ripple pattern. The hilt is ornate, designed for a king's hand, with crossguard worked in gold and garnets. Slightly shorter and lighter than its twin, built for one-handed use.

Also known as: Widow's Wail, Joffrey's sword, the king's blade
