Viserys Targaryen

Character from A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin

The exiled Targaryen prince who believed the Iron Throne was his birthright — a petty, abusive tyrant-in-waiting who sold his sister to a warlord and received a crown of molten gold for his trouble.

Viserys is what happens when entitlement meets impotence. He has spent his entire life being told he is a king while living as a beggar, and the cognitive dissonance has made him cruel and unstable. He abuses Daenerys because she is the only person over whom he has power. He speaks in grandiose terms about reclaiming his throne while demonstrating none of the qualities required to hold one. His death — a crown of molten gold poured over his head — is poetic justice delivered by the man he thought he was using.

Appearance

Silver-haired and purple-eyed with the Targaryen look, but gaunt and sharp-featured where Rhaegar was beautiful. Thin and twitchy, with a nervous energy that reads as menace. Dresses in threadbare finery — the last scraps of royal pretension maintained in exile.

Also known as: Viserys, Viserys Targaryen, The Beggar King
