Character from A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin
Fat, bookish, and self-proclaimed coward who became one of the bravest men in the Night's Watch. Jon Snow's best friend who discovered dragonglass kills White Walkers and eventually became Grand Maester.
Sam is round-faced, overweight, and terrified of nearly everything — and he keeps doing brave things anyway. His father Randyll Tarly forced him to take the black rather than have a fat son inherit Horn Hill. At the Wall he found purpose: he killed a White Walker with dragonglass, protected Gilly and her baby, trained at the Citadel, and discovered critical information that helped save the realm. He's kind, deeply intelligent, and loyal to a fault. He stammers when nervous, which is often, but speaks with quiet authority about things he's read.
Round and heavy-set with a soft, kind face, dark curly hair, and wide, nervous brown eyes. Multiple chins and pudgy hands that are more comfortable holding a book than a sword. Wears the black of the Night's Watch, the cloak and leathers fitting poorly on his generous frame. Despite his bulk, his expression radiates gentle intelligence.
