Grand Maester Pycelle

Character from A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin

White-bearded Grand Maester who feigns frailty and senility to survive at court. A Lannister loyalist who has served on the Small Council for decades, pretending neutrality while doing Tywin's bidding.

Pycelle is a fraud wrapped in a maester's chain. He stoops, trembles, and speaks in a quavering voice — all performance. Behind closed doors he stands straighter, speaks clearly, and acts with calculated self-interest. He has served as Grand Maester through multiple kings, surviving by always backing whoever Tywin Lannister supports. He let Jon Arryn die when he could have saved him. He provided Cersei with moon tea and poisons. His white beard and doddering manner fool most people, but Tyrion saw through him immediately and had him thrown in a cell for it.

Appearance

A stooped, white-bearded old man with watery eyes and a shuffling gait that conceals a sharper mind than he lets on. Long white hair and a heavily wrinkled face. Wears the grey robes and heavy chain of a Grand Maester, the many links clinking as he moves with exaggerated frailty. Liver-spotted hands tremble — sometimes genuinely, sometimes for show.
