Behind closed doors he stands straighter, speaks clearly, and acts with calculated self-interest. He has served as Grand Maester through multiple kings, surviving by always backing whoever Tywin Lannister supports. He let Jon Arryn die when he could have saved him. He provided Cersei with moon tea and poisons. His white beard and doddering manner fool most people, but Tyrion saw through him immediately and had him thrown in a cell for it.
