Mance Rayder

Character from A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin

Former brother of the Night's Watch who deserted and became King-Beyond-the-Wall. Charismatic leader who achieved the impossible — uniting the fractious wildling clans against the true enemy.

Mance doesn't look like a king. He's lean, ordinary-looking, with long brown hair going grey — he could pass for any ranger. That's partly the point. He leads through charisma, respect, and the ability to see past old grudges to common threats. He deserted the Watch because he saw the freedom beyond the Wall and couldn't go back to blind obedience. He united Thenns, giants, cannibals, and a hundred feuding tribes through sheer force of personality. He's a gifted singer, a pragmatic tactician, and the only man the wildlings ever chose to follow.

Appearance

Lean and weathered with a long face, brown hair streaked with grey, and sharp, intelligent eyes. A thin mouth quirked in perpetual amusement. Dresses in mismatched furs, leathers, and salvaged cloth — a patchwork cloak his signature — looking more like a traveling singer than a king. Moves with quiet, unassuming confidence.
