Jeor Mormont

Character from A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin

The Old Bear — bald, gruff Lord Commander of the Night's Watch who saw the threat beyond the Wall when no one else would listen. Gave Jon Snow the Valyrian steel sword Longclaw.

Jeor Mormont is the kind of leader who earns respect by being tougher, fairer, and more stubborn than everyone around him. Bald and broad, with a thick grey beard, he commands the Wall with gruff practicality. He abdicated Bear Island so his son Jorah could rule, then watched from afar as Jorah disgraced the family name. He recognized Jon Snow's potential immediately and groomed him for leadership, gifting him Longclaw — the Mormont ancestral Valyrian steel bastard sword. He was murdered during a mutiny at Craster's Keep.
