Hodor

Character from A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin

Huge, simple, gentle giant whose real name is Wylis. Can only say the word 'Hodor.' Carried Bran Stark on his back and held the door against the army of the dead — the act that gave him his name.

Hodor is enormous — well over seven feet — with a kind, simple face and strength enough to carry a crippled boy through the frozen wilderness. He can speak only one word: 'Hodor.' He's gentle, easily frightened by storms, and devoted to Bran Stark in the uncomplicated way of someone with a pure heart. The tragedy is that his condition was caused by Bran's own warging powers, reaching back through time — young Wylis's mind broke when he experienced his own future death, holding a door against wights, the words 'hold the door' collapsing into 'Hodor.'

Appearance

A gentle giant, enormously tall and broad with a simple, sweet face, kind brown eyes, and thick brown hair. Massive hands and a lumbering gait. Dressed in roughspun servant's clothes that strain across his huge frame. Despite his overwhelming size, his expression is perpetually mild and bewildered, knowing only his single word.

Also known as: Hodor, Wylis
