Balon Greyjoy

Character from A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin

Gaunt, hard, grey Lord of the Iron Islands who launched two failed rebellions against the Iron Throne. Father of Theon and Yara, brother of Euron. Murdered by Euron on a bridge at Pyke during a storm.

Balon Greyjoy is carved from salt and stubbornness. Gaunt and weathered, with grey hair whipping in the sea wind and a permanent expression of contempt, he rules the Iron Islands with an iron will and an iron refusal to learn from failure. His first rebellion cost him two sons and saw Theon taken as a hostage. Rather than temper his ambitions, he launched a second rebellion the moment the mainland fell into civil war. He rejected Theon for being raised 'green' while respecting Yara for earning her place on a ship's deck. He was pushed from a bridge by Euron and fell into the sea.

Appearance

A gaunt, hard man with a weathered face carved by salt wind, iron-grey hair whipping in the sea breeze, and cold dark eyes. Lean and tall with ropey muscles and a permanent scowl. Dressed in black leather and iron armor bearing the Greyjoy kraken, crowned with a driftwood crown. Carries himself with the unyielding, bitter pride of a twice-defeated king.
