Maester Aemon

Character from A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin

A blind, ancient maester of the Night's Watch who is secretly a Targaryen prince — he chose duty over the crown and has spent a century watching his family destroy itself from the far end of the world.

Aemon speaks with the gentle authority of someone who has outlived every mistake the world can make. He dispenses wisdom without condescension, asks questions that cut to the core of a problem, and treats every brother of the Night's Watch — from lord's son to murderer — with the same quiet respect. His Targaryen identity is not a secret he hides from shame but from wisdom: a Targaryen on the Wall would be a political liability. His grief for his family is private and bottomless.

Appearance

Incredibly old — over a hundred years — with a bald, spotted head and milky, blind eyes. Frail and stooped, wrapped in a maester's chain and Night's Watch black. His hands tremble but his voice remains clear and precise. His blindness makes people forget they're talking to royalty, which is how he prefers it.
