The sewers are both a functional waste system and a segregated society. Mutants — humans altered by centuries of pollution and radiation — are legally forbidden from living on the surface and have built their own community underground. Leela's parents live here and secretly watched over her from these tunnels throughout her childhood. The sewers occasionally become the setting for episodes dealing with social justice themes, though always filtered through Futurama's lens of absurdist comedy.
A vast network of damp tunnels and chambers connecting to Old New York's ruins. The mutant settlement has been built from scavenged materials into a functional if depressing underground community, lit by torches and bioluminescence.
