Old New York was destroyed in 2308 and buried beneath the construction of its replacement. Now it exists as a dangerous underground world accessible through the sewer system. It's populated by mutants who are forbidden from living on the surface. For Fry, it's a bittersweet connection to the century he lost — the ruins of places he once knew, now unrecognizable. Leela's parents live here. The ruins contain remnants of 20th-century culture that occasionally become relevant to plot or comedy.
A subterranean ruin of familiar 20th-century buildings, streets, and landmarks — all crumbling, overgrown, and lit by bioluminescent fungi. The remains of recognizable structures poke through centuries of decay. It feels like a post-apocalyptic museum.
