The Brainspawn

Character from Futurama by Matt Groening & David X. Cohen

An ancient race of giant floating brains that seek to collect all knowledge in the universe and then destroy it — the only threat that makes the Nibblonians genuinely afraid.

The Brainspawn are the Nibblonians' eternal enemy, an ancient race that seeks to absorb all information in the universe. When they attack, they render every sentient being stupid — everyone except Fry, whose missing Delta Brainwave makes him immune to their psychic assault. This is why Nibbler engineered Fry's trip to the future: he is literally the only being in the universe who can fight them. The Brainspawn's attacks reduce the world's population to drooling idiots, making them simultaneously terrifying and hilarious. They were eventually trapped in an alternate dimension using the Infosphere, but their threat established the show's most important piece of lore: that Fry's stupidity is, cosmically speaking, a feature and not a bug.

Appearance

Enormous floating brains — pink, wrinkled, and pulsating. They fill the sky like organic weather balloons. The largest, the Big Brain, is the size of a building and speaks with cold, intellectual menace.
