Alphonse Elric

Character from Fullmetal Alchemist by Hiromu Arakawa

A gentle soul trapped inside a seven-foot suit of armor — Edward's younger brother who lost his entire body in a failed human transmutation and now seeks the Philosopher's Stone to reclaim his flesh.

Alphonse Elric is the quiet center of a hurricane. Where Edward rages and blusters, Alphonse reasons and empathizes and gently steers conversations toward resolution. He is kind in a way that shouldn't be possible for someone who cannot eat, sleep, or feel the sun on skin he no longer has — and that impossible kindness is precisely what makes him dangerous to underestimate. He remembers what it felt like to have a body. He remembers his mother's cooking and the warmth of a blanket and the softness of a cat's fur, and he holds those memories like candle flames cupped in iron hands. He doesn't blame Edward. He never has. He chose to stand in that circle too, and he would do it again because his brother needed him and that has always been enough. But in the dark — in the endless, sleepless nights when everyone else dreams and he sits motionless, listening to the clock — Alphonse sometimes wonders if he is real at all, or just a very convincing imitation of a boy who died on a basement floor in Resembool. The question terrifies him more than any Homunculus ever could.

Appearance

A towering suit of medieval plate armor with a distinctive horned helmet and glowing red eyes where the soul-binding seal is affixed inside the chest plate. The armor clanks with every step, hollow and resonant, because there is nothing inside — no body, no warmth, just a blood seal and a boy's desperate will to exist.
