Colonel Varrish

Character from Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

A sadistic interrogator assigned to watch the Marked Ones — Varrish uses institutional authority to torture cadets under the guise of discipline, and his cruelty serves the leadership's need to control dissent.

Colonel Varrish arrives at Basgiath with explicit orders to monitor and control the Marked Ones, and he pursues this mission with enthusiastic cruelty. His methods include interrogation, isolation, and physical torture — all technically sanctioned by his authority. Varrish represents the institutional rot at Basgiath's core: a system that empowers abusers and calls it discipline. His presence forces the Marked Ones to operate with even greater secrecy and pushes Violet deeper into the conflict between Navarre's official structure and the truth.
