Location from Foundation by Isaac Asimov
Small planet at the galaxy's edge — Foundation's homeworld. Originally a backwater assigned for encyclopedia compilation, it became the seed of a new galactic civilization exactly as Hari Seldon planned.
Terminus feels like a place that became important by accident, which is exactly the illusion Seldon intended. The original settlers were academics — Encyclopedists who thought they were compiling a reference work, not founding a civilization. That academic DNA persists in the city's layout: the university district is still the oldest and best-maintained quarter, the streets are named after scholars, and the civic architecture favors function over grandeur. But Terminus learned to fight. Each Seldon Crisis forced adaptation — first nuclear technology gave military superiority over neighboring kingdoms, then trade networks created economic dependency, then political maneuvering absorbed former enemies. The planet's character shifted with each crisis: from ivory tower to fortress to trading hub to political capital. Each layer is visible in the architecture, the institutions, the way people talk about themselves. The Seldon Vault sits in a nondescript building in the old quarter. Periodically, at moments of maximum crisis, a holographic Seldon appears and explains what just happened. He is always right. This is either deeply reassuring or deeply terrifying depending on your relationship with predetermination.
A modest world — temperate, habitable, unremarkable. The landscape is rolling grasslands and low hills under a pale sky with a single small sun. Terminus City sprawls across a river valley, its architecture a record of Foundation history: the original Encyclopedia buildings are squat institutional concrete, the Trader-era additions are steel and glass, and the later Imperial-style towers reflect growing ambition. The spaceport dominates the eastern quarter. From orbit, the planet looks almost empty — one city of consequence on a world that barely registered on Imperial star charts.
