Smyrno

Location from Foundation by Isaac Asimov

Neighboring kingdom competing with Anacreon for regional dominance — another former Imperial province that regressed and schemed while the Foundation quietly became indispensable.

Smyrno is Anacreon's mirror — a neighboring kingdom with the same ambitions, the same technological regression, and the same fatal underestimation of the Foundation. The rivalry between Smyrno and Anacreon was the lever Salvor Hardin used to keep both kingdoms too busy threatening each other to threaten Terminus. This is the Foundation pattern at its purest: never fight when you can balance, never balance when you can make yourself necessary. Smyrno accepted Foundation technology for the same reason Anacreon did — because refusing meant falling behind a rival. Neither kingdom realized they were being managed until it was too late to resist.

Appearance

Similar to Anacreon in its mix of decaying Imperial infrastructure and cruder local construction. The cities are functional rather than grand, built for a military aristocracy that valued fortification over aesthetics. Industrial zones still operate former Imperial factories at a fraction of their capacity, producing crude versions of technology their grandparents took for granted.
