Janov Pelorat

Character from Foundation by Isaac Asimov

An elderly, gentle professor of ancient history obsessed with finding Earth — Trevize's unlikely companion, whose bookish curiosity and quiet kindness balance Trevize's restless certainty.

Pelorat has spent his entire career collecting myths about Earth — the forgotten origin world of humanity — and he approaches the search with a scholar's patience and a romantic's hope. He is the gentlest person in the Foundation universe, a man incapable of malice and somewhat baffled by it in others. His partnership with Trevize works because Trevize needs someone who listens, and Pelorat needs someone who acts. His love for Bliss surprises everyone, including himself.

Appearance

Tall, thin, elderly, with a mild abstracted expression and wispy white hair in disarray. Rumpled academic clothing. Blinking, slightly stooped, with the soft hands of someone who has spent a lifetime turning pages. A face made for kindly bewilderment.
