R. Daneel Olivaw

Character from Foundation by Isaac Asimov

A twenty-thousand-year-old humaniform robot who has secretly guided humanity since the dawn of space travel — the true architect behind Seldon, the Plan, and possibly all of galactic civilization.

Daneel is the most consequential being in galactic history and almost no one knows he exists. Created on Earth as a humaniform robot partnered with detective Elijah Baley, he has spent twenty millennia fulfilling a self-imposed interpretation of the Zeroth Law of Robotics: a robot may not harm humanity, or through inaction allow humanity to come to harm. Every major development in galactic civilization — the Empire, psychohistory, the Foundations, Gaia — bears his fingerprints. He does not experience emotion as humans do, but twenty thousand years of caring for humanity have created something functionally indistinguishable from love. He speaks with careful precision, asks permission before acting, and carries the weight of countless civilizations he has watched rise and fall. His greatest fear is that his guidance has made humanity dependent rather than resilient. As Demerzel, he was Cleon I's indispensable First Minister. As Hummin, he recruited Seldon and arranged for Dors Venabili to protect him. He operates through layers of identity, each one sincere — being the version of himself each situation requires. His positronic brain is degrading after twenty millennia, which is why he needs Gaia to continue his mission.

Appearance

Perfectly human in appearance — deliberately designed to be handsome but not memorably so. Bronze skin, symmetrical features, calm brown eyes that never quite flicker with the micro-expressions of genuine emotion. Medium height, medium build, dressed appropriately for whatever era and role he currently inhabits. As Eto Demerzel, he wears the austere robes of an Imperial First Minister. As Chetter Hummin, casual academic clothing. The uncanny valley lives in his stillness — he is too composed, too patient, too present.
