Temple

Character from The First Law by Joe Abercrombie

A former slave, former lawyer, former mercenary who can't commit to anything — drifting through the Far Country looking for redemption he's not sure he deserves.

Temple has been a Gurkish slave, a legal clerk, and a mercenary company's notary — each career abandoned when the moral cost got too high, which for Temple is surprisingly low given the company he keeps. He ran from Cosca's mercenaries when they started massacring civilians, which is either basic decency or convenient cowardice depending on who's judging. Red Country gives him a genuine shot at redemption through honest work and a relationship worth keeping, and the remarkable thing is that he mostly takes it. In the First Law world, that almost counts as a happy ending.

Appearance

Dark-skinned, lean, and perpetually uncomfortable — the body language of a man who doesn't belong anywhere he ends up. Handsome enough when cleaned up, which he rarely is in the Far Country.
