Malacus Quai

Character from The First Law by Joe Abercrombie

Bayaz's sickly apprentice who turns out to be something far worse — a vessel for an ancient spirit whose true nature rewrites everything you thought you knew about the quiet man in the background.

Quai spends most of the trilogy being ill, being ignored, and being underestimated. He's Bayaz's apprentice, and everyone assumes he's the weakest member of the party. The revelation that he's been replaced by (or was always) Tolomei — the daughter of the Maker, seeking revenge on Bayaz — is one of the series' best twists. He's proof that in the First Law world, the person you ignore is the one who kills you.

Appearance

Pale, thin, and perpetually unwell — the look of someone who's barely holding together. His sickness is genuine but its cause isn't what anyone assumes. His eyes are watery, his frame fragile, his presence easily overlooked.

Also known as: Quai, Malacus Quai, Tolomei
