Isern-i-Phail

Character from The First Law by Joe Abercrombie

A hillwoman mystic who chews bones, reads omens, and says exactly what you don't want to hear with the cheerful certainty of someone who thinks fate is hilarious.

Isern speaks in riddles, prophecies, and insults delivered with equal enthusiasm. She's the North's spiritual voice — the mystic who sees the threads of fate and comments on them with the breezy irreverence of someone who knows the future and finds it amusing. She mentors Rikke in the Age of Madness, teaching her to use the Long Eye while needling everyone around her with uncomfortable truths. She's the series' trickster figure — wise, chaotic, and utterly indifferent to anyone's comfort.

Appearance

Wild-haired, painted, and festooned with bones, feathers, and other totems. She looks like a walking shrine to northern mysticism. Her teeth are stained from bone-chewing and her grin is unsettling.
