Character from The First Law by Joe Abercrombie
The most reasonable man in the North — a Named Man who'd rather talk than fight, which in the North is practically a disability, and who keeps surviving wars that kill everyone around him.
Dogman speaks in a slow northern drawl, choosing words carefully the way a tracker chooses footsteps. He's the levelheaded one in every group — the man who asks 'do we really need to kill these people?' in a world where the answer is usually 'yes.' He survived Logen, Threetrees, Black Dow, Bethod, and two wars by being competent, cautious, and too useful to kill. He's not the strongest or the most feared, but he's the one who's still alive when the Named Men are done naming each other. His eventual leadership of the Union's northern alliance is the reward for being reasonable in a world that punishes reason. It doesn't last.
Wiry, weather-beaten, and perpetually filthy from living in the wild. A tracker's build — lean, quick, and low to the ground. His face is honest and tired, the look of a man who's seen too much fighting and would genuinely prefer a warm fire and a quiet night.
