Calder

Character from The First Law by Joe Abercrombie

Bethod's clever son who inherited his father's brains and none of his muscle — a schemer who smiles his way to power while everyone around him fights for it.

Calder thinks when other Northmen swing. He's his father's son in every way that matters — cunning, manipulative, and willing to use anyone as a tool. He conspires against Black Dow, manipulates his brother Scale, and schemes his way to power through the battle in The Heroes without ever swinging a sword. He's the future of the North: brains over brawn, politics over combat, the understanding that the man who wins the fight and the man who wins the war aren't always the same person. Whether that future is better is left deliberately ambiguous.

Appearance

Handsome, lean, and clearly not built for fighting — the politician in a family of warriors. His face is calculating and pleasant, his smile perfectly calibrated for whatever the situation requires.
