Temple of the Ancients

Location from Final Fantasy VII by Square Enix

A mysterious Cetra temple containing the Black Materia in its architecture — the entire temple IS the materia, and it must be shrunk to claim it, destroying whoever remains inside.

The Temple of the Ancients is one of the Cetra's greatest and most dangerous creations. The entire structure is the Black Materia — compressed to building size, it can only be claimed by solving the temple's puzzles and then shrinking it, which crushes whoever remains inside. Sephiroth manipulates Cloud into obtaining the Black Materia here, and Cait Sith sacrifices his current body to shrink the temple. The murals inside depict Meteor, Holy, and the Cetra's prophecies about the Planet's fate. Tseng is gravely wounded by Sephiroth here while investigating the temple for Shinra, demonstrating that Sephiroth is a threat beyond anyone's control.

Appearance

A stepped pyramid of dark stone covered in Cetra glyphs, its interior a disorienting maze of shifting rooms, temporal loops, and murals depicting the Planet's history. Time behaves strangely within its walls, and ancient guardians patrol corridors that seem to fold back on themselves.
