The Lifestream is the fundamental metaphysical reality of FFVII's world — the Planet is alive, and the Lifestream is its blood. Every living soul returns to the Lifestream upon death, contributing its memories and experiences to the collective spiritual energy, which in turn gives rise to new life. Shinra's mako reactors extract and refine this energy into electricity, literally draining the Planet's life. Materia forms naturally when Lifestream crystallizes, encoding the Planet's accumulated knowledge into usable magic. Aerith's consciousness persists within the Lifestream after her death, and she ultimately directs it to stop Meteor alongside Holy. The Lifestream's defense of the Planet in the finale is the story's ultimate expression of its themes.
Rivers and currents of luminous green-white energy flowing through subterranean channels, occasionally surfacing as mako springs. Within the stream, ghostly impressions of memories, voices, and faces of the dead drift past. At its densest, reality dissolves into pure swirling light.
