Forgotten Capital

Location from Final Fantasy VII by Square Enix

The abandoned city of the Cetra, also called the City of the Ancients. A hauntingly beautiful ruin where Aerith prays to summon Holy — and where Sephiroth descends to murder her at the altar.

The Forgotten Capital is the last great city of the Cetra, preserved in eerie perfection despite millennia of abandonment. Its architecture is organic and alien, grown rather than built, reflecting the Cetra's harmony with the Planet. The city holds the key to summoning Holy — the Planet's ultimate defensive spell — and Aerith travels here alone to pray at the altar, having inherited the White Materia from her mother. It is here that Sephiroth descends from above and kills Aerith as she prays, in one of gaming's most devastating scenes. Cloud lays her body to rest in the lake beneath the altar, where she continues to call Holy from within the Lifestream.

Appearance

Luminous coral-like structures rise from a crystalline forest, their organic curves unlike any human architecture. Bioluminescent plants cast an ethereal blue-green glow over empty plazas and spiraling towers. At the city's heart, a crystalline staircase descends to an altar suspended over a subterranean lake of pure Lifestream.
