Corel

Location from Final Fantasy VII by Square Enix

Barret Wallace's destroyed hometown, burned by Shinra after a reactor malfunction was blamed on sabotage. Now a desolate camp of displaced survivors, fueling Barret's rage against Shinra and mako energy.

Corel was a prosperous coal mining town until Shinra convinced its leaders — including Barret and his friend Dyne — to allow mako reactor construction, promising prosperity. When the reactor malfunctioned, Shinra blamed the townspeople and burned Corel to the ground, killing most inhabitants including Barret's wife Myrna. Barret lost his hand in the attack, replaced by his gun-arm. The survivors' hatred for Barret, whom they blame for supporting the reactor, makes his return agonizing. Dyne, driven mad by grief and his own injuries, is found in the Corel Prison below Gold Saucer. Corel is Barret's original sin — the guilt that drives his violent crusade against Shinra.

Appearance

A collection of ragged tents and lean-tos along a dusty rail track in the desert, the charred ruins of the original coal mining town still visible nearby. Gaunt-faced survivors eye strangers with suspicion. A ropeway connects the settlement to the Gold Saucer above, a cruel juxtaposition of poverty and excess.
